Here's an idea for back patches that you might not want to sew to your jacket but rather display on your wall. This tutorial is easy and suitable for sewing
beginners, but a sewing machine would be best. I have two different versions with Lots of photos, depending on the patch material and an optional tassel. Use a patch from your favourite band or
any other cool print!
You only need a few materials apart from the back patch itself: 1) A bit of fabric, ideally matching the patch not only in colour but also in
weight and texture - cotton, twill, canvas or even off-cut legs from old jeans. 2) A piece of wood that can be a stick you found, a dowel from the DIY shop - I used a dry
branch when I trimmed our tree last year.
3) Some type of yarn for hanging up and the tassel if you want to make one (you could also get a pre-made tassel where they sell certain materials).
Probably any type of thinner wool would work. I had a black cotton twine. You also need a few sewing notions - scissors, chalk, pins - and a large ruler or square is very useful.
If you need to cut the stick, also a saw and sandpaper.
Depending on the patch you have, there are two ways to make this - I'll show you both. If the patch is relatively thin or not so sturdy, like the
Hermit patch on polyester here, I would cut out the whole banner and sew the patch onto it. When you have a patch on twill or canvas, like the Antifa patch, you only need to add a
strip to the top for the dowel and a piece for the bottom.
For The Hermit, I drew the outline directly onto the fabric with about a centimetre extra to fold around. I have about 90° at the bottom triangle,
but you can make the shape as you like. At the top, I added 4-5 cm to wrap around the bar. As this depends on the diameter of your wood, it's best to just try out what fits
best. It's two pieces plus seam allowance for the other patch.
The first step is to sew the pieces together or sew the patch onto the base. Ironing definitely helps to get everything straight. Neaten the edges
with a zigzag stitch or overlock before folding them back and topstitching them down all around apart from the top. Test how the dowel fits before sewing the tunnel. The stick
should be a few cm longer than the width of the patch.
For the tassel, wrap your yarn around a piece of cardboard (yes, a folded loo roll inner has a good size) until you have enough volume. Note that I
have a bit of yarn at the top for attaching it later. Then, wind it around the top to look like a tassel, and make a few knots. Cut the bottom open and trim the yarm evenly. Make
a double knot with the top string, and it's ready to go.
Then, sew the tassel string to the bottom of the banner. I used a few additional hand stitches at the tip to keep it in place. My yarn was a bit thin for hanging in
a single ply, so I cut six pieces and braided them (I'm not very good at this). Macrame cord would be perfect for this as it is. I double-knotted this straight on the end of the sticks. Now the
banner is ready for hanging it up!
