Happy Halloween! I know it's been a while again, but I didn't want to miss my yearly Halloween DIY post. This is a super quick project, you still might want to
make one now. A few weeks ago, I found a tutorial for sock pumpkins that was inspired by another DIY blog post. You know I like to do things differently, and with materials I already
have, so here's my version of sock pumpkins - goth/punk style!
Of course, I wouldn't cut up brand-new socks for this. I guess everyone has socks with holes at the bottom but a perfectly fine upper part. Maybe you
also have one you didn't want to throw out just yet? I had these three pairs I bought because of the cute animal print, which turned out to be from way
more synthetic fibres as the label indicated and not comfortable at all - damn!
Now, socks are great for this because they are already a tube, and you don't need a sewing machine. I wanted to use the patterned part of the socks (the soles for some strange
reason), so I cut them up and sew three different ones of them together into a wider tube. The rest follows the usual tutorial pretty much. First, you close the bottom of the tube
with wide hand stitches and turn.
For the filling, I used the cut-up bits from the socks together with some other fabric scraps. Nothing goes to waste here, but of course, you can use
wadding if you have that. Then, the top is also closed with hand stitches but not pulled completely tight. Use a very long, sturdy thread and the longest
needle you have, because you have to stitch through the middle to create the grooves.
I made another small black one from the upper part of one sock where that last part was a bit easier. Pull the yarn until it looks right and make knots to
hold everything in place. The last step is to add a piece of stick to the top, with a glue gun or any other strong glue. I used a branch of our ash tree as
I did for the wall hangings, but I have seen pumpkins online with
cinnamon sticks.
Yeah, these definitely match my style, and the rest of my (all-year) decorations! I hope you had a great weekend and are enjoying the rest of your Halloween evening or Samhain!
